Guide to Choosing a Remodeling Contractor

Detailed Interiors is often asked “how do we find the right remodeling contractor?” After many conversations, we found ourselves sharing the same core tips over and over.  Whenever you are considering a contractor for work on your home, your landscape or even your business, keep these tips in mind.

Opinion and Inside Perspective:

For any homeowner, the most difficult step of a remodeling project is finding a contractor that is trustworthy and skilled. Especially, if it’s your first time hiring outside help. With years of experience, Detailed Interiors has an inside perspective that most homeowners don’t. That means, we understand how to spot someone worth hiring (and someone who isn’t).

To help people in their search, our team put together a guide to walk you through the particulars of finding a great contractor. Below are a few of our favorite suggestions, but download the full guide to understand all the in’s and out’s of the process.

Things To Look For

Be wary of low prices. It is very true in this field that you get what you pay for. The first thing homeowners look for is pricing and most will go with the lowest-priced bid. But, low prices are often a reflection of the contractor not understanding everything involved in producing a successful project. Deatiled Interiors often sees the fallout of these projects and are called to fix the mistakes. That last thing you want is an easily avoided error that puts your project out of budget and past its deadline.

One of the best things to ask is how long they have been in business. New contractors are going to be learning on your dime and in your home. Detailed Interiors’ Master Carpenter, Steve Matela, has more than twenty years of experience and multiple nationally recognized certifications. Look for continued educations, specialized certifications and length of work history as indicators of the quality of your contractor.

Want another tip you might not have thought of? Don’t hire a contractor who has had multiple insurance carriers. That usually means that he or she is probably not employable.

Finding The Right Fit

Now that you know what to look for, there are a few ways to narrow your pool of remodelers even further.

Online identity. Every contractor worth hiring should have some sort of online presence. Try to find profiles on third party websites, Facebook or with the Better Business Bureau. Ideally, these sites have verified testimonials and original photos of the contractors completed projects. Apart from our website, we have extensive profiles on Houzz and Facebook. Take a look!

Face to Face meeting. The best way to gauge if you can work well with someone is to meet them in person. Do this by calling the contractor and asking for an initial consultation at your home. During the meeting, take note of certain particulars. Do they arrive on time? Are they organized with business cards and important paperwork to give or show you? Do they have a professional demeanor? These are all indicators of the way they will work if hired.

Detailed Interiors believes there is a perfect contractor out there for everyone. With a little bit of research and time, you’ll be able to find the professional best suited for you. Download our guide to learn more insider tips and contact us today for more information about our services.
